Pokémon Go and Your Business

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few days, you’ve probably heard of Pokémon Go. The game is a geolocation game that uses landmarks and historical sites along with other city features to scatter a variety of Pokémon across the map. When you use your smartphone, you can see these colorful creatures and capture them! If this sounds like a callback or perhaps stirs something within your memory, that’s probably because the franchise was created in 1995. It quickly became a hit, and Pokémon Go is the latest entry in this long-running series of video games, trading cards, television shows, and other merchandise.

You might think that this is just another of the latest trends. You might even question why we’re taking the time to write about it. The answer is fairly simple: Pokémon Go is great for business. Don’t believe us? Keep reading for some tips that will help you make the most out of this wildly popular game.

Are you a Gym or a Pokéstop?

The first thing you should do is determine whether or not your business is already a Gym or a Pokéstop. You can do this by installing the game and checking! If your business has been designated as either, then you’ll probably already be noticing a higher-than-average amount of traffic lately. If you play your cards right, this can translate into an increase in sales and consumer engagement.

Instead of discouraging individuals from playing on your property, welcome them! Create an environment that encourages people to stop and stay a bit. This is especially true if you have anything like food or beverages that can help hungry players refuel before going out to hunt more Pokémon. Even if you don’t, however, you can encourage them to take pictures on your property or even check-in using something like Facebook. This will let other players know that your business will welcome them and will help create some buzz about your brand.

Lure Them In

Even if your business isn’t a designated Gym or Pokéstop, you can still use Pokémon Go in your favor. Consider purchasing a few Lures! Lures are used to increase the number of Pokémon in your general area for a certain amount of time. This will help greatly increase the amount of traffic in your area, and can lead to more people taking the time to stop in and check out your business. Consider making it known that you encourage Pokémon Go players and engage with customers. This will, in turn, help you attract even more players in the future.

Create a Good Impression

Perhaps the best thing you can do during this increase of traffic flow is to make a good impression! Show your business in its best light and take the time to inspire loyalty in the players. That might seem like a tall order, but all it really takes is a bit of kindness and professionalism to plant the idea in someone’s mind that they’d like to return to your business sooner rather than later. This is how you can end up really using today’s popular trend to your long-term advantage.

Encourage Content Creation

Are players all over your business? Encourage them to let other people know it! Ensuring that players feel welcome and working to foster a fun sense of community will help promote your business like nothing else. Don’t underestimate the power of user generated content when it comes to building a strong brand that lasts well into the future. While other businesses are busy complaining about the influx of Pokémon Go players, you can take another route entirely and use the popularity of the game and its increased traffic to your advantage.
